Bryan Peterson's understanding photography field guide?

I was wondering if Bryan Peterson's understanding photography field guide basically sums up understanding exposure and shutter speed? I'm new to photography, but am really interested in it and wanted to know if I could just buy the field guide and get the same knowledge? I also want to know what other books you would recommend, I'm thinking about also getting "The Digital Photography Book" by Scott Kelby. Thanks =)
